All c.1921 Candle Co. candles are hand crafted in the mountains of West Virginia. Candles are created with American grown soy, phthalate free fragrance and essential oil blends and a cotton lead free wick.
Why we use soy.
Most store-bought candles are made with paraffin wax and fragrance with phthalates. Paraffin wax candles can be a harmful to your home and family, as it is a by product of Petroleum. In addition to paraffin, the other chemicals, such as phthalates (hormone disruptors), added to this type of wax typically release harmful carcinogens into the air that you and your family are breathing in.
We choose soy and phthalate free ingredients because it is clean and non-toxic in our home. Soy wax is plant based, therefore making it safe for our environment.
When burning your candle, the burn time will vary dependent on placement of your candle. Drafty areas of your home will burn your candle more quickly. The height of your wick will make the burn time vary as well. An untrimmed wick will burn your candle quickly. Always be sure to trim your wick before lighting your candle. If a wick is not trimmed it will change the burn time of your candle. Be sure to allow your candle to burn to a full melt pool, until the wax has melted all the way to the edge, typically at least an hour. By not allowing your candle to reach a full melt pool on your first burn, it will make your candle wick begin to tunnel and will not continue to melt the wax to the edge each additional burn.
The first time you light your candle, make sure you have 3-4 hours available for the candle to burn while attended.
Place your candle on a flat, flame retardant surface, away from drafts, children, pets, curtains, furniture or any other places that could be dangerous with a lit candle.
It is best to light your candle with a long match or grill lighter, as short matches will burn the jar and create a black film on the jar.
When lighting your candle for the first time, and each time thereafter, allow the wax to melt all the way to edge of the edge of your candle. Once the melted wax reaches the glass, allow it to melt until it is about 1/4” deep. This is where all of that wonderful aroma is released. If you cannot smell the aroma, it means that the jar is too small for the room or area that it is being burned. Consider using a larger candle or placing a couple of candles in one room to increase the aromatic benefit if you have a large room(s) and tall ceilings.
Keep your wick trimmed to 1/4”. Occasionally, mushrooming may occur. This usually occurs when the candle is richly scented or contains vanillin. After the candle is extinguished, allow wick to harden and carefully trim to 1/4”. To keep your candle clean and safe, do not let the burnt wick fall into the melted wax. It is best to snuff your candle to extinguish it, blowing your candle out is not recommended.
Your soy candle is dye free. This does not mean that soy remains white or cream in appearance. Dependent upon the fragrance, soy can take on different hues. Rest assured that this is due to the fragrance used and typically occurs with scents that are high in vanillin.
Soy changes its form, it expands and contracts. It may also look frosted or marbled. These ‘flaws’ are normal and it is a clear indication that you have purchased a 100% soy candle.
Discard your candle once the remaining wax reaches 1/2” deep or you can clean and reuse your jars for another purpose. If cleaning your jar, be sure to remove the wick and metal wick tab at the bottom of your jar, never microwave your candle jar.
Each of our candle jars are selected with the environment in mind. Each jar can be cleaned out once the candle has finished burning. Be sure to remove the wick and metal wick tab at the bottom of your jar, do not microwave your candle jar.
If you are local, c.1921 Candle Co. offers a "Recycle My Jar" program. You may return your clean candle jars and receive one dollar off your next candle order for each jar returned.
